Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen revival (technically a sequel) was shrouded in secrecy from the get go amid a fair amount of scepticism.
However, now that the cat is out of the bag and the dust has settled, I can safely say that the HBO series is a delightful piece of storytelling that is richly layered with time, race, motherhood, moral ambiguity.
With a brilliant cast to carry the story forward the creators deserve a huge amount of credit for taking on a huge franchise and stitching together a delectable yarn.
Originally planned as a mini-series, HBO seems to have a conundrum on its hands, and a good one at that – expand and go all out or stick to its guns.
For someone not that familiar with the source material Watchmen does a great job at making you want to know more. You definitely need to take out time and catch this one.
For a complete experience, I would suggest to watch 3 episodes at a time (there are 9 in all) and then listen to the official Watchmen companion podcast.
Happy watching and listening. And then perhaps head back to the graphic novel. :)
